Personally, I wouldn't describe it as dumb. It's a Zhang Yimou movie so if you know what to expect, you won't be disappointed. Nominally, his themes are centered around the ideas of familial strife and does so from the perspective of the woman of the family. Infidelity, domestic violence, authoritarian control, marital alienation...these have been central themes in many of his earlier films. (Judou, Raise the red Lantern, To Live...) His pacing in this particular time is a step away from his more recent works set in ancient China i.e. House Of Flying Daggers, Hero. So if you're not expecting a full blown martial arts movie, then it's not necessarliy a bad pick.

Gong Li looks pretty good in this movie. good fight scene at the end. if you like this you should check out "The Banquet" with Zhang Ziyi

I liked it, but many of my friends didn't like it because they expected it to be filled with martial arts. I don't think the concept of the movie was about the martial arts. It reminds me of another Zhang Ziyi movie "Legend of The Black Scorpion" also known as "Night Banquet" or "The Banquet." That was a long movie, but I lived through it. It was pretty good if your into the type of movies with a long plot Link to Poster o.O
