Protection & Advocacy, Inc. (PAI) has a vacancy for an organized and detail oriented Legal Secretary II for our Oakland Regional Office. The following qualifications must be met:
1. Knowledge of legal phrases and terminology, as well as demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, including correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure.
2. Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
3. Five years of litigation secretarial experience; OR A Paralegal Certificate, plus two years of progressively responsible litigation secretarial experience.
4. Keyboard proficiency: 55 net words per minute.
5. Skilled use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
6. Demonstrated experience performing detailed administrative and legal secretarial work, with the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, to work well under pressure, and to effectively reprioritize and handle multiple tasks and fluctuating deadlines, with minimal supervision.
7. Ability to solve problems, which involve complex situations that present new challenges, where only limited standardization exists.
8. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team; to be flexible with changing situations; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees in various offices and programs, clients, and people outside the agency.
9. Experience with setting up filing systems and managing voluminous documents using modern recordkeeping and data management systems.
10. Effective telephone skills, including the ability to handle situations patiently and tactfully.
11. Experience with litigation case management, including discovery and pretrial documents.
12. Experience with the proper formatting of pleadings, proper citation form, constructing Tables of Authorities and Tables of Contents, as well as serving counsel and filing legal documents with the courts and administrative agencies.
13. Knowledgeable about the filing procedures and court proceedings for state, federal, and appellate courts, including the attachment of exhibits.
14. Experience using Westlaw or other legal research database.
15. Experience working with or sensitivity to persons with disabilities.
16. Experience working with or sensitivity to persons from ethnic or language distinct communities. Apply Online here
